Pumpkins

THE BEGINNING :

2017
My gardening mishaps and victorys :
Soon to be posted are pics and info from my first
try at gardening in boxes. What i learned,
what i will be doing this coming year and why. Lets just say
i made almost every mistake i could to
start this season and still ended up with fruit
on a few plants. had little trouble with bugs.

first mistake :
Plant spacing ??? I don't know that term :P
I didn't thin at all , I had planed on it. Never
did anything .

second mistake:
The box ! I re-purposed a pair of
old speaker boxes. They where a set of old 1970's
pioneer house brand "centrex" 8 inch. but the
boxes where cheap chip board with sticker
paper. didn't make for great planter boxes.
{add size later }

third mistake:
No feeding plan in place at all.
I got good magical grow planting mix.
Mind you it is all garden safe.
(i will not be eating this set of fruit)
I put in a small amount of old
fish tank gravel in the base for drainage .
( about a cup each)

this is just a start of mistakes i made trying to
growing in boxes.

At one point i realized i need to pull some of the
starts from that front bed.can you say
over crowding ?? I had planted 2 more beds
that didn't do well planted that same way.
i had 0 of 24 seed come up in my
large size box, so that is where this
ends up early season.
Unfoutunatly i didn't do the same for
a few more starts :(

I realy wish i would have taken more pictures
of this yearly season , but the few i did, most where lost.
So my first round when not so great and round 2 was not
much better.
we left off with 2 small boxes over planted.
no thinning , 0 of 24 in the large box. I added
yet another box out back with what i think is
Sugar pie pumpkins. That brings it to 4 planter boxes
of pumpkin plants. well it didn't end there. i desided
i was gonna buy some plants and make another box.
So i got a super moon and a hooligan plant.
Put them in a clear plastic box and let them go.
at seasons end  0 growth. after a month or so ,
every thing is going well , i am feeding with a
very low nutrient magical grow feed at this point.
so i ordered some seed for the next year about this time.
My new seeds come in 3 days later and i can't
help my self so i germinate 3 seeds. 1 takes off
really well. so i plant it in a very small planter box
(2 square feet max! ).
This plant just takes off and a long vine starts in
just a couple of weeks. This plant has some of
the biggest leafs i have ever see.
So i read up a little and find out Jarrahdale pumpkins
have 30 foot long vines normaly.

The Endding:
So at this point its almost the end of the 2017 season , i have 2 Jack be little
Pumpkins to show for my season. A Jarrahdale on vine still that is doing
well , and at least 1 Jack be little to go.
not a great harvest but so much learned.
